Direct drive standard

For direct-drive by the pedals, a specialized bottom bracket axle is fitted securely within the hollow main shaft. A bearing is mounted externally on each side of the hollow main shaft so that the shaft rotates freely relative to the front fork or rear stays. The hub is oriented so that the gear shift slider faces toward the crown of the fork or stays to facilitate the connection of a shifter cable. A small torque reaction lever is connected to the fork or stay at one end and at the opposite end to the hub, using one of mono-blade mounting holes.

In this configuration, the hub could be used in a direct-drive recumbent bike, as illustrated below:
